GLASGOW — Juanita Johnson Bird

BOWLING GREEN – Juanita Johnson Bird, 84, of Bowling Green, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late William Arthur “W.A.” and Mae Cowles, and wife of the late Roy Johnson and Garland Bird, who survives.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel, with burial in Brownsville City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.



Gladys Jewell Payne Birge

GLASGOW – Gladys Jewell Payne Birge, 93, of Glasgow, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Glasgow Health & Rehabilitation Center.

A native of Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late B.M. and Nettie Hunt Payne. She was a retired inspector at Kentucky Pants Company and had attended Grider Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include two nieces, Stacey Hunt and her husband Steve, and Amanda Coats and her husband Memory, all of Glasgow; one sister-in-law, Patty Payne; several great-nieces, great nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Quentin Birge; four sisters, Hazel Cornwell, Zelma Spradlin, Nora Payne and Lottie Payne; and two brothers, Richard Payne and Wilson Payne.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in White Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Winona Clark Brooks

GLASGOW – Winona Clark Brooks, 84, of Glasgow, formerly of Horse Cave, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at NHC Healthcare in Glasgow.

She was a retired motel manager and a member of Ollie Missionary Baptist Church.

The Edmonson County native was the daughter of the late Charlie and Virginia Kersey Clark and wife of the late Rex Brooks.

She is survived by a former daughter-in-law, Beverly Warren; granddaughter, Amber Leeson; and two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Kinsey Leeson, all of Glasgow.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Roger Brooks.

The family has chosen cremation with no visitation or funeral service. Brooks Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.



Ella Mae Bryant

GLASGOW – Miss Ella Mae Bryant, 83, of Glasgow, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Glenview Healthcare Facility in Glasgow.

Arrangements are being handled by Burnam & Son Mortuary Inc. in Bowling Green.



Callie Catherine Saltsman Jeffries

GLASGOW – Callie Catherine Saltsman Jeffries, 91, of Glasgow, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at her home.

Born in Grayson County, she was the daughter of William “Bill” and Flora Harp Saltsman. Mrs. Jeffries was a homemaker, a member of the Quilters Club at Lera B. Mitchell Clubhouse, served as a member and chaplain of D.A.V. Chapter 20 Auxiliary, and was a member of Big Meadow Baptist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Linda Sue Neagle and friend Dennis Glass, of Bon Ayr, Wanda Smith and husband Jim, of Bowling Green, Regina Fancher and husband Dale, of Knob Lick, and Deborah Reece and husband Terry, of Wisdom; 13 grandchildren, Donna (Terry) Edwards, Patty (Billy) Hatfield, Scott (Stacey) Smith, Ben (Cathy) Spillman, Tiffany Everhart, John Duncan (Fiancée Julie), Melinda (John) Spaulding, Melissa (John) Pipkin, Jennifer (Jeff) Fugate, Derrick (Candice) Neagle, Amanda (Derek) Watt, Daniel Burris (Emily Harris) and Heather (Joey) Dennison; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Roscoe Saltsman, Hayden Saltsman and Herman (Betty) Saltsman, all of Glasgow, and Bill (Betty) Saltsman Jr., of Columbus, Ind.; three sisters, Stella Gooden and Dorine Reece, of Glasgow, and Mona Pierce, of Taylorsville, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orbrey; two daughters, Bonnie L. Sherfey and Marcella Pardue; a granddaughter, Kimberly Neagle; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Coy, Roy, Sherman and George Saltsman; and two sisters, Lennie Fields and Sylvia Saltsman.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17,  at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Big Meadow Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday.

Gladys Z. Sandidge

HORSE CAVE – Gladys Z. Sandidge, 63, formerly of Hardyville, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Caverna Memorial Hospital.

A native of Edmonson County, she was a daughter of the late Sanford and Cora Trulock Glass. She was a CNA at Hart County Health Care Center and a member of Ollie Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Richard; one daughter, Vickie Ralston and husband Robert, of Hardyville; one son, Ronald Sandidge and wife Alicia, of Cub Run; two grandchildren, Ethan Sandidge and Hannah Sandidge; one sister, Geneva Jewell, of Glasgow; three brothers, Leroy Glass and Gene Glass, of Hardyville, and Freeman Glass, of Bee Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dewayne Glass and Kenneth Glass.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in New Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to help defray funeral expenses.
