Ora Mardell Anderson
BURKESVILLE – Ora Mardell Anderson, 78, of Burkesville, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at Cumberland County Hospital. She was a homemaker and a daughter of the late Glen and Susan Syra Shaw.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Anderson.
Funeral services were 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 12, at McMurtrey Funeral Home. Brother Freddie Froedge officiated. Burial followed in Summer Shade Cemetery.

Roger Dale Ballard Sr.
GLASGOW – Roger Dale Ballard Sr., 66, of Glasgow, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at his residence. He was the son of the late George Wilton Ballard and Bertha Alice Poore Ballard.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Ballard; one son, Roger Dale Ballard Jr.; two daughters, Anita Berry and her husband Tim, and Pamela Ballard; seven grandchildren, Timothy Berry, Roger Berry, Emily Berry, Noah Rayland, Adam Rayland, Abigail Rayland and Kay-Leigh Duron; one brother, Junior Ballard; four sisters, Bonnie Ballard, Alice Medley, Connie Pulliam and Jeanette Rogers.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Rayland; his brothers, Jerry Lee Ballard, Wayne Ballard and Billy Ballard; his sister, Loretta Ballard; and one grandson, Justin Horton.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at United Faith Independent Church in Griderville with burial in Lighthouse Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral home after 4 p.m. Tuesday and after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Jean Swift Chism
TOMPKINSVILLE – Jean Swift Chism, 84, of Tompkinsville, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at home.
Born in Christian County on June 18, 1929, she was the daughter of Reuben H. and Katherine M. Swift and the wife of the late Tim K. Chism. They were married on Nov. 22, 1952, in Herndon.
She moved to Tompkinsville in 1950 as a home extension agent. She graduated from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1950 and later received her master’s degree and Rank 1 from Western Kentucky State Teachers College. Mrs. Chism served as a teacher and guidance counselor at Temple Hill School, Tompkinsville High School, Gamaliel High School and Monroe County Middle School for more than 30 years. She was active in Tompkinsville United Methodist Church, Tommie Heilman Cloe Marrs UMW Circle, Campbellsville Emmaus, Daughters of the American Revolution, Monroe County Retired Teachers Association, Monroe County Homemakers Association, Tompkinsville Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Old Mulkey, Friends of the Library, William B. Harlan Library Book Club and the Chism Family Association. She was an avid reader and family history buff.
Survivors include three children, Timothy “Pat” K. Chism Jr. and wife Dorothea, Huntsville, Ala., Dr. James S. Chism and wife, Marcia, Mount Vernon, and Katherine Chism Gordon and husband William, Lebanon; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, four nephews, five nieces and one first cousin.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, at Yokley Trible Funeral home. Burial followed at Evans-Oak Hill Cemetery, Tompkinsville.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Tompkinsville First United Methodist Church Building Fund, Evans-Oak Hill Cemetery or the American Heart Foundation.
