Ora Mardell Anderson
BURKESVILLE – Ora Mardell Anderson, 78, of Burkesville, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at Cumberland County Hospital. She was a homemaker and a daughter of the late Glen and Susan Syra Shaw.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Anderson.
Funeral services were 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 12, at McMurtrey Funeral Home. Brother Freddie Froedge officiated. Burial followed in Summer Shade Cemetery.

Roger Dale Ballard Sr.
GLASGOW – Roger Dale Ballard Sr., 66, of Glasgow, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at his residence. He was the son of the late George Wilton Ballard and Bertha Alice Poore Ballard.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Ballard; one son, Roger Dale Ballard Jr.; two daughters, Anita Berry and her husband Tim, and Pamela Ballard; seven grandchildren, Timothy Berry, Roger Berry, Emily Berry, Noah Rayland, Adam Rayland, Abigail Rayland and Kay-Leigh Duron; one brother, Junior Ballard; four sisters, Bonnie Ballard, Alice Medley, Connie Pulliam and Jeanette Rogers.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Rayland; his brothers, Jerry Lee Ballard, Wayne Ballard and Billy Ballard; his sister, Loretta Ballard; and one grandson, Justin Horton.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at United Faith Independent Church in Griderville with burial in Lighthouse Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral home after 4 p.m. Tuesday and after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Jean Swift Chism
TOMPKINSVILLE – Jean Swift Chism, 84, of Tompkinsville, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at home.
Born in Christian County on June 18, 1929, she was the daughter of Reuben H. and Katherine M. Swift and the wife of the late Tim K. Chism. They were married on Nov. 22, 1952, in Herndon.
She moved to Tompkinsville in 1950 as a home extension agent. She graduated from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1950 and later received her master’s degree and Rank 1 from Western Kentucky State Teachers College. Mrs. Chism served as a teacher and guidance counselor at Temple Hill School, Tompkinsville High School, Gamaliel High School and Monroe County Middle School for more than 30 years. She was active in Tompkinsville United Methodist Church, Tommie Heilman Cloe Marrs UMW Circle, Campbellsville Emmaus, Daughters of the American Revolution, Monroe County Retired Teachers Association, Monroe County Homemakers Association, Tompkinsville Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Old Mulkey, Friends of the Library, William B. Harlan Library Book Club and the Chism Family Association. She was an avid reader and family history buff.
Survivors include three children, Timothy “Pat” K. Chism Jr. and wife Dorothea, Huntsville, Ala., Dr. James S. Chism and wife, Marcia, Mount Vernon, and Katherine Chism Gordon and husband William, Lebanon; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, four nephews, five nieces and one first cousin.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, at Yokley Trible Funeral home. Burial followed at Evans-Oak Hill Cemetery, Tompkinsville.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Tompkinsville First United Methodist Church Building Fund, Evans-Oak Hill Cemetery or the American Heart Foundation.
Matthew Shane Green
TOMPKINSVILLE – Matthew Shane Green, 26, of Tompkinsville, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, in Scottsville, due to a boating accident.
Shane was born in Glasgow on June 1, 1987, a son of Kathy Jones and Terry Green.
Shane is survived by his mother, Kathy Jones and her husband Kevin; his father, Terry Green and his companion, Anita York.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Yokley Trible Funeral Home with Jeremy Yokley and Darrick Proffitt officiating. Visitation is in progress and will continue Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in White Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mary F. Hagan ‘Granny’ Hodges
GLASGOW – Mary F. Hagan “Granny” Hodges, 92, of Glasgow, passed away peacefully at her home in Glasgow, Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at 10:14 p.m.
Born Nov. 22, 1920, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of the late Rosco and Della Strode, also of Monroe County and the widow of the late Ralph Hodge, of Glasgow.
She was of the Church of Christ faith and a former employee of Mallory’s for over 20 years. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother and a lover of animals, especially her pet, Tager. In all of her travels to New York City, Atlantic City, Miami, Fla., Indiana and Philadelphia, Glasgow was her favorite place to live and where she called home for over 50 years.
Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Hagan; two sons, Ray W. Hodge, of Glasgow and Wayne Hodge, of Glasgow; three daughters, Sharon Carole, Joanne Bybee, and Barbara Burris (James), all of Glasgow; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Hodge; one son, Kermit Hodge, two sons-in-law, John Lapchak and Keith Bybee; one great-great-grandson, Rylan Hodge and a grandson-in-law, Kip Depp.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug.17, 2013, at A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the White Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday.

SMITHS GROVE – James F. “Jimmy” Jackson, 77, of Smiths Grove, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at his residence.
He was the son of the late Oakley Wade Hampton Jackson and Pauline Hudson Jackson, and husband of 51 years to the late Wanda Smith Jackson.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home Bowling Green Chapel. Burial will be in Smiths Grove Cemetery

GLASGOW — Sarah Farris Jordan, 73, of Glasgow, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at her residence.
Born in Barren County, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Elaine Edmunds Farris and wife of the late David R. Jordan. Mrs. Jordan was a member of Glasgow Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Mark Jordan and wife Jennifer, of Glasgow; a daughter, Laura Brown and husband Sammy, of Glasgow; three grandchildren, David Alan Brown, Victoria Jordan and Andrew Brown; two step-grandchildren, Justin Wells and wife Linsey, and Tyler Wells; a step-great-grandchild, Nova Brooke Wells; a sister, Jessie Barton, of Nashville, Tenn.; a niece, Kathy Malloy and husband David, of Nashville; two nephews, Kelly Smith and wife Trish, and Jason Smith and wife Samantha, both of Nashville; great nieces and nephews, Millan Smith, Nealie Smith, Jared Smith, Jesse Smith, Asher Anderson and Elliott Anderson.

Robert Jewell Martin
GLASGOW – Robert Jewell Martin, 81, of Glasgow, died Sunday Aug. 11, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Barren County, a son of the late John Burl Martin and Vassie Ruth Jackman Martin. Mr. Martin was a retired foreman for Sorensen Manufacturing in Glasgow and he enjoyed hunting and being outdoors. He married Patsy Crabtree, Dec. 23, 1961, and was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Crabtree Martin; one daughter, Michelle Glover and boyfriend Dale Steff, of Glasgow; two sons, Terry Lynn Williams and wife Julia, of Glasgow, and Tony Martin and wife Denise, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; five grandchildren, Alanda Johnson and husband Shaun, of Glasgow, Ashley Johnson and husband Robbie, of Franklin, Tenn., Blake Williams and wife Amy, of Glasgow, Casey Glover, of Nashville, Tenn. and Amanda Martin, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; five great-grandchildren, Julie Johnson, Gracie Johnson, Carly Tabor, Haden Williams, all of Glasgow, and Maclyn Johnson, of Franklin, Tenn.; five sisters, Beatrice Glass, Velma Bush, Mary Landrum, Maxine Hawkins and husband G.A., all of Glasgow, and Betty Sue Esters, of Cave City; two brothers, Eugene Martin and Gilbert Martin and wife Norma, both of Glasgow; two special caregivers, Christine Sublet and Ashley Rigsby; and several nieces and nephews.

Jewell Spradlin Owsley
MUNFORDVILLE – Jewell Spradlin Owsley, 69, of Munfordville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at her home.
She was a Hart County native. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie Jewell Spradlin and Olga L. (Sugar) Spradlin.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Winn Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Houk Cemetery. Visitation is in progress at the funeral home and will continue after 9 a.m. Tuesday until service time.
James E. Strode Sr.
DECATUR, Ill. – James E. Strode Sr., 75, of Decatur, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family, after a long rough battle with cancer.
He was born June 28, 1938, in the Randolph community of Metcalfe County, the son of Melvin Thomas and Dovie Isabell (McCoy) Strode. He was previously employed as a mechanic with ADM. He was a member of GT Church and enjoyed fishing. He married Margaret Ferguson June 26, 1960. They shared more than 53 years of marriage.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Margaret, of Decatur; sons, James E. Strode Jr. and wife Carla, and Michael S. Strode, both of Decatur; daughters, Diana L. Glass and husband Randell, of Glasgow, and Susan G. Barrett and husband Wendell, of Decatur; brothers, Jasper “Ray” Strode and wife Betty, of Moweaqua, Ill., Melvin Strode and wife Glenda, of Decatur, and Marvin Strode and wife Hazel, of Georgia; sisters, Minnie Christine Borchart and husband Louis, of Moline, Ill., and Elsie Marie Harper, of Glasgow; 16 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, brother, Charles, and sisters, Mary and Velma.
Services to celebrate James’ life will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the funeral home. Burial with “Flight Home” Ceremony will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the wishes of the family in c/o Margaret Strode.

BOWLING GREEN – Bobby Joe Vaughn, 74, of Bowling Green, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.
He was the son of the late James Edgar and Ailene Martin Vaughn, and husband of Barbara Helm Vaughn, who survives.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home Bowling Green Chapel.
Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
