GLASGOW — Virginia Frances Akers Downing

GLASGOW – Virginia Frances Akers Downing, 91, of Glasgow, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

Born in Glasgow on June 1, 1922, she was a daughter of the late George H. Akers Sr. and Mamie Alice Goff Akers.

Virginia was a graduate of Glasgow High School (1939) and Sullins College in Bristol, Va. She was a homemaker, a former employee of New Farmers National Bank, and more recently had been associated with her late husband, John Calloway (“J.C.”) Downing, in Cook & Downing Insurance Agency (now Cook, Downing, & Underwood). J.C. and Virginia had been married for 63 years at the time of his death. She was a longtime member of Glasgow Baptist Church and the 3 L’s Sunday School Class, and was a member of Glasgow Garden Club.

She is survived by two daughters who adored her, Anne Grant Underwood and husband Buddy, and Jenny Jean Downing, all of Glasgow; two grandchildren, Josh Underwood and wife Sabrina, of Glasgow, and Jenny Kate Guy and husband, Jamie, of Mableton, Ga.; one great-granddaughter, Anniston Banks Guy; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, George Homer Akers Jr., of Glasgow; and two sisters, Elizabeth Caroland, of Saint Louis, Mo., and Marjorie Mazur, of Columbia, S.C.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial contributions to Glasgow Baptist Church, Barren River Animal Welfare Association (BRAWA) or Community Medical Care.

Anna Jean Herndon Garcia

GLASGOW – Anna Jean Herndon Garcia, 64, of Glasgow, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at University of Louisville Hospital.

A daughter of the late Harvey Willis McKinney and Elva Oma Dyer McKinney, she was an accountant.

Survivors include her husband, Greg; three children: Robert McKinney, Renee Herndon, and Jamie Herndon; two brothers, Paul Blakley and Willie Blakley; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with cremation to follow. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
