GLASGOW — Lester Eugene Hume

TOMPKINSVILLE – Lester Eugene Hume, 85, of Tompkinsville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at Monroe County Health & Rehab Center.

Eugene was born in Tompkinsville, on Aug. 24, 1928, a son of the late Honor Kathleen (Rasner) and William Nelson Hume. On Aug. 10, 1951 he was married at Mount Gilead by Tollie Phemister to Hazel (Copass) Hume, who survives.

He worked as a International Harvester dealer. He was a member of Rockbridge Missionary Baptist Church.

Eugene is survived by a daughter, Rebecca “Diane,” wife of Terry McPherson, of Somerset; two sons, Gerald “Jerry” Eugene, husband of Diane Hume, of Tompkinsville, Perry Morris, husband of Dr. Kim Eakle Hume, of Tompkinsville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Eugene is also survived by three sisters, Virginia Deckard, of Gamaliel, Merle Grider, of Tompkinsville, and Naomi Guffey, of Tompkinsville; two brothers, Rudolph Hume, of Tompkinsville, Mark Hume, of Lexington.

He is preceded in death by one son, Billy Keith Hume; one grandson, Max Brandon Hume; three brothers, Ishmeal, Morris and Bennie Frank Hume.

Funeral services will be at Yokley Trible Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, with Gary Emberton officiating. Visitation is in progress and will continue on Thursday, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in Skaggs Creek Cemetery.

John Preston ‘J.P.’ Likens

GLASGOW – John Preston “J.P.” Likens, 84, of Glasgow, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at his home.

He was born Sept. 22, 1929, the son of the late John and Flossie Hume Likens.

J.P. was a retiree of SCRTC and a long-time member of Grider Memorial Baptist Church. He was also a caretaker of a special great grandson Cain Moore, who he often referred to as “Sam.”

Survivors include two sons, John P. Likens Jr. (Ann), of Glasgow and Dennis Wayne Likens (Sally), of Clinton Township, Mich.; two daughters, Martha Sue Faulkner (Rollin) and Brenda Ann Moore (Royce), of Glasgow; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Maxine Collins; and a brother Wayne P. Likens (Alice), both of Glasgow and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae Smith Likens; two brothers, Everett Lee Likens and Louie Lykens; a sister, Elizabeth Ann Likens Norman; and two grandsons, Tony Allan Vaughn and Bobby Wayne Vaughn.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Friday.


Jewett Steenbergen

GLASGOW – Jewett Steenbergen, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at The Medical Center in Bowling Green.

He was the son of the late Ucle Dewey Steenbergen and Edna Lois Hoover Steenbergen. He was a Workd War II Navy veteran and a member of South Green Street Church of Christ. Jewett worked at FRECC for 39 years full-time and 20-plus years part-time. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.

Jewett is survived by his wife, Tody Steenbergen; two sisters, Mildred Niemeier and Frances Holmes; 17 nieces and nephews: Bobby Steenbergen, Madeline Honeycutt, Sandra Walker, Dennie Mizell, Steve Niemeier, Lois Lynn Holmes, Carole Dawn Durham, Scott Holmes, Lisa Edmunds, Larry Self, Gary Self, Jenny Robinette, Jeff Curd, Dan Curd, Ferrell Price, Phillip Price and Leslie Brockett; and 43 great-nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dewey Steenbergen Jr.; one sister, Wanda Self Curd; one nephew, Michael Steenbergen; and one niece, Patty Brockett Cymbala.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and before the service on Friday.

GLASGOW – Rev. Martin Ballard, 94, of Glasgow, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at his residence. Funeral services will be noon Saturday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in Locust Grove Cemetery.

WARSAW –  Fannie Lou Gilbert, 90, of Warsaw, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Gallatin Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel, with burial in Fairview Cemetery.

SMITHS GROVE – Mollie Jean Huff Hodge, 61, of Smiths Grove, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.

SUMMER SHADE – Charles Morris Rush, 81, of Summer Shade, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Barren County Health Care in Glasgow. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in Missionary Mound Cemetery.

MAGNOLIA – Jack Vedell Wilson, 91, of Magnolia, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at his home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Cave City United Methodist Church. Burial in Linwood Cemetery with full military honors will be 2 p.m. Friday.
