Ovela Shaw Poland
GLASGOW — Ovela Shaw Poland, 83, of Glasgow, formerly of Monroe County, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013, at The Medical Center in Bowling Green.
Ovela was born in Hestand on Jan. 3, 1930, a daughter of the late Jesse and Vernie (Spears) Shaw.
On April 26, 1947, at Barren County Courthouse she married Paul Poland, who passed away April 19, 2006.
She worked as a seamstress at Red Kap for 10 years.
Ovela is survived by two sons, Jack Wayne and his wife, Bonnie Poland, of Dayton, Ohio, and Jerry and his wife, Lisa Poland, of Glasgow. Also surviving are six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, Amy Houchens, Brad Poland, Melanie Mann, Dustin Morrison, Ryan Adams, Christopher Adams, Elexis Houchens, Rilan Poland Mann, Riker Mann, Rinnik Mann and Paityn Skaggs. Ovela is also survived by a sister, Alice Lambert, of Flora, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Poland; parents, Jesse and Vernie Shaw; a son, James Poland; four brothers, Leonard Shaw, Charles Shaw, Johnny Shaw and Billy Shaw; and by three sisters, Mazolla Shaw, Leona Ford and Lillie Phillips.
Funeral services will be at Yokley Trible Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, with Keith Spear officiating. Visitation is Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home in Tompkinsville. Burial will be in White Cemetery.
Shelley Ray Smith
HANOVER, Ind. — Shelley Ray Smith, 80, of Hanover, Ind., formerly of Burkesville, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013 at his home.
He was born on Oct. 6, 1932, in Cumberland County, to the late Finis and Elva Garrett Smith. Shelley was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include one son, Phil Smith of Hanover, Ind.; one sister, Vela Jackson, of Louisville, and a host of other relatives and friends also survive
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, at Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. Burkesville, with burial in Burkesville Cemetery. Family requests visitation from 5 until 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.
