David ‘Mike’ Holland
LEXINGTON — David Michael “Mike” Holland, 39, of Lexington, died Thursday at his home. He was the son of the late Steve Holland and Patti Pedigo Harbison and husband Eddie, of Summer Shade.
Mike was a United States Army Ranger and of the Catholic faith. He was a master mason of the Lexington Masonic Lodge No. 1.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Lynette Holland, of Lexington; one sister, Shelly McIntyre, of Summer Shade; his grandmother, Jean Pedigo, of Edmonton; two uncles, Stevie and wife Cherry Pedigo, of Brownsville, and Jimmy and wife Lynn Pedigo, of Scottsville; one aunt, Patti Holland Kirby, of Edmonton; one neice and one nephew, Lucas Michael McIntyre and Sierra Garmon.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his grandfather, James Floyd Pedigo; grandmother, Nellie Jean Holland; great-grandparents, Jim and Winnie Holland, Marrs and Corene Devore, uncles Carlie Holland, Joe and Donald Pedigo.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in Edmonton Cemetery.
GLASGOW — Nelda Morrison, 87, a resident of NHC Healthcare in Glasgow, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at NHC. Nelda was born on March 28, 1926, in Cumberland County to the late Ed and Letha (English) Morrison.
Prior to going to NHC HealthCare, Nelda resided in Edmonton. She was of the Methodist faith, a retired hairdresser and later worked at the Cumberland Parkway Toll Plaza in Edmonton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lurene Morrison and Elizabeth Morrison; and one brother-in-law, Carl B. Young.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Young, of Edmonton; one nephew, Jackie Young and his wife Sharon, of Edmonton; one niece, Janice “Toots” Williams and her husband Charlie, of Tompkinsville; four great nieces, Dee Dee White and her husband David, of Tompkinsville, Leslie Shive and her husband Mark, of Summer Shade, Aimee Sexton and her husband Matt, of Edmonton, Amber Collins and her husband Chase, of Edmonton; one great-great-niece, Brittney Billingsley and her husband John, of Fountain Run; four great-great-nephews, Brian White, of Tompkinsville, Kaleb Spillman, Will Brody Spillman, and Brayden Shive, all of Summer Shade.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Burkesville, with burial in Burkesville Cemetery. Family requests visitation from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday, April 8, at the funeral home.
Ovela Shaw Poland
GLASGOW — Ovela Shaw Poland, 83, of Glasgow, formerly of Monroe County, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013, at The Medical Center in Bowling Green.
Ovela was born in Hestand on Jan. 3, 1930, a daughter of the late Jesse and Vernie (Spears) Shaw.
On April 26, 1947, at Barren County Courthouse she married Paul Poland, who passed away April 19, 2006.
She worked as a seamstress at Red Kap for 10 years.
Ovela is survived by two sons, Jack Wayne and his wife, Bonnie Poland, of Dayton, Ohio, and Jerry and his wife, Lisa Poland, of Glasgow. Also surviving are six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, Amy Houchens, Brad Poland, Melanie Mann, Dustin Morrison, Ryan Adams, Christopher Adams, Elexis Houchens, Rilan Poland Mann, Riker Mann, Rinnik Mann and Paityn Skaggs. Ovela is also survived by a sister, Alice Lambert, of Flora, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Poland; parents, Jesse and Vernie Shaw; a son, James Poland; four brothers, Leonard Shaw, Charles Shaw, Johnny Shaw and Billy Shaw; and by three sisters, Mazolla Shaw, Leona Ford and Lillie Phillips.
Funeral services will be at Yokley Trible Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, with Keith Spear officiating. Visitation is Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home in Tompkinsville. Burial will be in White Cemetery.
Shelley Ray Smith
HANOVER, Ind. — Shelley Ray Smith, 80, of Hanover, Ind., formerly of Burkesville, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013 at his home.
He was born on Oct. 6, 1932, in Cumberland County, to the late Finis and Elva Garrett Smith. Shelley was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include one son, Phil Smith of Hanover, Ind.; one sister, Vela Jackson, of Louisville, and a host of other relatives and friends also survive

Vera Hazel Taylor
GLASGOW — Vera Hazel Taylor, 93, of Glasgow, died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Barren County Health Care. She was born in Barren County, the daughter of the late Warner and Lena Brooks Mansfield.
Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was devoted to her family.
She is survived by one son, Michael Taylor and wife Sharon, of Glasgow; one daughter, Margaret Gooden and husband Dennie, of Glasgow; five grandchildren, Leigh Ann (Frankie) Huddleston and Robin (Jason) Owen, both of Glasgow, Eric Taylor, of Huntsville, Ala., Chris (Emma) Taylor, of Cave City, and Amy (Troy) Holden, of Westmoreland, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren, Matt Grizzle, Alyssa Beard, Taylor Owen, Josh Owen, Alex Taylor, T.C. Huddleston, Spencer Huddleston and Josh Holden; one brother-in-law, Tommy Samson, of Glasgow; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Owens Taylor; and one sister, Wilma Mansfield Samson.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
GLASGOW — Elise M. Tinsley, 79, of Glasgow, died Friday, April 5, 2013, at Bowling Green Nursing & Rehab in Bowling Green.
Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Hubert “Hub” and Maggie Stone McKinley. She was married 27 years to the late Willard Carlos Tinsley. Mrs. Tinsley worked in manufacturing for 55 years and attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Glasgow.
She is survived by a step-son, Larry Tinsley and wife Debbie, of Glasgow; seven grandchildren, Amanda Bybee and husband Richard, Stephen Hinton and wife Marquita, Josh Hinton and wife Tiffany, Brock Tinsley and wife Amanda, Kaleb Tinsley, Emily Hogan and Austin Farmer and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Tuesday morning until time for the service.
