Bessie Lorene Shanks, 93, of Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN — Bessie Lorene Shanks, 93, of Bowling Green, died at her residence on March 31, 2014.

Ms. Shanks was born in Austin, to the late Elbridge and Maggie Holder.

Ms. Shanks was preceded in death by four sisters, Minnie Underwood, Amy Blair, Clara Borders, and Edna Ruth Holder; and five brothers, Jimmie D. Holder, Davis Holder, Willie Holder, Earl Holder and Roy Holder.

Ms. Shanks worked at Derby Union Underwear for 45 years and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Ms. Shanks is survived by a son, Joe Howard Shanks, of Elizabethtown; two granddaughters, Lydia Jo Shanks and Evelyn Lorene Shanks, both of Bowling Green; two great-grandsons, Michael Widener-Bailey (Natasha) and Benjamin Widner (Haley), both of Bowling Green; one great-great grandson, Nikolai Charles Widner; several nieces and nephews; a special nephew, Marty Wilkins; close church friends, David Wiseman and Ben Tomblinson; close family friend, Beverly Wagoner Floyd.

The family would also like to thank Frances Graham and all of the church and family friends who brought meals to Ms. Shanks.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2 and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, at the funeral home.
