Margaret Vance Anderson

CLINTON, Tenn. — Margaret Vance Anderson, 90, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2008. A member of First Baptist Church in Clinton, Tenn., she was born in Glasgow, the daughter of James Woodford Vance and Lucie Akers Vance.

Mrs. Anderson received her undergraduate degree from Western Kentucky Teacher’s College and earned two Master degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, one in business and one in guidance and counseling.

In 1943, she married Raymond Anderson of Madisonville. After his service in World War II, they moved to Williamsburg, where they both taught at Williamsburg High School. In 1952, they moved to Clinton, Tenn., where Mrs. Anderson taught business at Clinton High School and Mr. Anderson was the band director. During her tenure at Clinton High School, Mrs. Anderson also served as vice president and became the school’s first guidance counselor. She continued in that capacity for the duration of her career, except for a short sabbatical during which time she wrote her acclaimed account of the desegregation of Clinton High School, The Children of the South. In addition to her book, Mrs. Anderson wrote a series of articles for the New York Times Magazine and lectured extensively. In the 1960s, she also served on The President’s Council for Education.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond, as well as her three brothers, Mrs. Anderson is survived by daughters, Martha Anderson Damiano and husband Frank, and Carolyn Anderson Todd and husband Peter, all of Oak Ridge, Tenn. Grandchildren are Mollie Elizabeth Todd of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Meagan Todd Normand and husband Dave and great-grandson, Peter Blaise Normand, all stationed in Italy with the Army. Other surviving family members include first cousin Van Vance of Indiana; nieces, Gatha Chen and Susie Vance, and nephew, Johnathan Vance.

Receiving of friends will be Wednesday night, April 30, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m. with funeral following at 8 p.m. at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, Tenn. Officiating will be Terry Baker and the Rev. Sam Sean.

Mrs. Anderson will be laid to rest at the Glasgow Municpal Cemetery on Friday, May 2, 2008. A receiving of friends will be held at Hatcher-Saddler Funeral Home from noon until 1 p.m. on May 2, 2008, with interment following.

Memorial for Mrs. Anderson may be sent to Green McAdoo Cultural Center, 101 School street, Clinton, TN 37716; or Friends of the Clinton Public Library, 118 South Hicks Street, Clinton, TN 37716. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of Clinton is in charge of Tennessee arrangements.



Johnny Combs II

GLASGOW — Johnny Combs II, 21, died Wednesday morning, APRIL 30, 2008, at the U of L Hospital in Louisville after an illness.

His arrangements are incomplete, but are under the direction of the A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home.



Verna Ruth Morgan

GLASGOW — Verna Ruth Morgan, 91, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

Arrangements are incomplete, but under the direction of the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.



Marjorie Francis

CAVE CITY — Marjorie Francis, 88, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Calhoun and Pearl Baker Maner. She was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Peden and husband, Jimmy, of Cave City; one sister, Ruby Davis of Florida; one sister-in-law, Margaret Maner; special niece and nephews, Gail (Bob) Lukens of Texas, Ronnie (Carol) Snider and Gerald (Joy) Snider, all of Georgia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Jewell Francis; two brothers, Frank Maner and Cecil Maner; one sister, Dorothy Snider.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Union No. 2 Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Eddie Louis ‘Roscoe’ Williams

GLASGOW — Eddie Louis “Roscoe” Williams, 53, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at his home.

He was born in Glasgow, the son of the late Walter G. and Lucille Stockton Williams. Mr. Williams was a long distance truck driver and was a member of Queens Chapel Baptist Church at Hiseville.

Survivors include four sisters, Betty J. Crayton of Bowling Green, Shelvy Ann Bevel (Henry) of Des Moines, Iowa, Minnie L. Jones (James A.) of Edmonton and Jewell D. Green of Bowling Green; two aunts, Ora Ethel Stockton Nelson (Thomas) of Cridersville, Ohio, and Sarah Stockton Stovall of Louisville; seven nieces and nephews, Henry Bevel III, Walt Bevel, Roxanna Connor, Marc Jones, Phyllis Jones, Maurice Jones and Erica Greene; seven great-nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Queens Chapel Baptist Church with burial in the Lou Green Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home and at Queens Chapel Baptist Church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time for services.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Southern Kentucky, 1027 Broadway Ave., Bowling Green, KY or the American Cancer Society.

LOUISVILLE — Marsha A. Wardlaw, 53, passed away at home on Sunday, April 27, 2008. Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Church United Methodist, 4614 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m. today at Pearson Funeral Home, 149 Breckinridge Lane in Louisville. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Christ Church United Methodist Building Fund in Marsha’s memory.
