William A. Conyers Jr.

HORSE CAVE — William A. Conyers Jr., local retired pharmacist and businessman, passed away Monday, April 20, 2009, at his home in Horse Cave after an extended illness.

Bill grew up in Hardyville in Hart County and was a U.S. Army veteran of the World War II era. Following military service, he graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (then located in Louisville) in 1950. He then moved to Horse Cave and, along with his father, purchased the old Wilson Drug Store. He ran that business as Caverna Drugs until 1990 when he sold the business to the Rite Aid Corporation. With the sale of the business, he went into semi-retirement, working only part time in local retail pharmacies and the Caverna Hospital pharmacy. During his time in Horse Cave, he was involved in many areas of civic affairs. Service over the years included Caverna PTA, Caverna Board of Education, Horse Cave Chamber of Commerce, Horse Cave City Council, Horse Cave Water and Sewer Commission, Green River Valley Water District Board of Directors, Caverna Hospital Board of Directors and mayor of Horse Cave. During his term as mayor, among other things, he oversaw the construction of the first citywide sewer system in Horse Cave. The Chamber of Commerce awarded him the Citizen of the Year Award and in December 2007 awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award. The Kentucky Pharmacists Association presented him the Bowl of Hygeia Award in 1989. This award, presented annually, goes to one pharmacist in each state for outstanding contributions to his or her community. In 1990, U. S. Pharmacist magazine chose him as the national Community Pharmacist of the Year, also for contributions to his community.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Beverly Jacks Conyers; three daughters: Mary Anne Richardson and husband, Kemp, of Franklin, Tenn., Karen Harmon of Horse Cave. and Jane Adams of Mayfield; three sons: William A. Conyers III and wife, Millie of Glasgow, Mark T. Conyers and wife, Debbie, of Anderson, S.C., and Robert N. Conyers and wife, Lori of Franklin, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two nieces.

Preceding him in death were his parents, W.A. (Alfred) Conyers and Audrey Conyers; a sister, Marjorie Nell Hewitt, and a son, Timothy David Conyers.

Funeral Mass will be conducted at Our Lady of the Caves Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, with burial in Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery with full military services conducted by Glasgow Chapter of the D.A.V. No. 20. Winn Funeral Home is in charge of services. Visitation will be today (Wednesday from 2 until 7 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. There will be no visitation prior to services on Thursday.

Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Southern Kentucky, Lifeline Homecare or Our Lady of the Caves Catholic Church.

Tyrone ‘T-why’ Darnell Thornton

LOUISVILLE — Tyrone “T-why” Darnell Thornton, 35, died Friday, April 17, 2009, in Louisville.

He was the son of Bob­by Thornton of Louisville and the late Mamie Thornton.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2009, at Woodsonville Baptist Church, Munfordville, with interment at Woodsonville Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Woodsonville Baptist Church. There will be a memorial service at 6 p.m. ET, Thursday, April 23, at Little Flock Missionary Baptist Church, 1030 S. Hancock, Louisville.
