EL PASO, Texas — James Howard Allen, 87, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso. The Glasgow native entered the Navy in 1938, along with friends, T.J. Jewell and “Snooks” Spillman. He was on the USS Lexington in the battle of Coral Sea, when it was attacked in World War II. He left the Navy and later joined the Army. After 20 years of service, he worked at Fort Bliss with Civil Service as an electronics technician and retired in the late 1980s. A full military burial was held at Fort Bliss, Texas, on April 8. James Howard was the son of the late Roger Allen and Nancy Crenshaw Allen. He was given his middle name from the doctor who delivered him, Dr. C.C. Howard of Glasgow. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Hicks Allen; a grandson, Brian Bradley; brothers, Cecil and Richard Allen; and sisters, Ruby Young and Mary Frances Pemberton. A memorial gathering of friends and family, organized by Jenny Morrison, sister-in-law, and Jennie Young, niece, will be Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Glasgow at New Salem United Methodist Church, 1307 New Salem Road, just off U.S. 68/Ky. 80. Survivors include a son, Phillip Allen of El Paso; a daughter, Sheila Allen of El Paso, and a son, David Allen and his wife, Cathy, of Walton; one granddaughter, Jennifer; one sister, Margaret Hamilton of Tampa, Fla.; many nieces and nephews, as well as relatives and friends in Barren, Allen, Warren, Simpson and Metcalfe counties. Pearl Mansfield Collins LOUISVILLE — Pearl Mansfield Collins, 90, formerly of Glasgow, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in Louisville. She was a member of the Poplar Grove Baptist Church and a retired employee of A.F. Crow Funeral Home. Survivors include nine nieces: Barbara Briggs, Margery Hines (Gardner), Flora Smotherman (James), Shirley Mansfield and Betsy Brawner (the Rev. Wallace), Mary Ellen Mansfield and Stella Stevens, all of Louisville, Charlene Bell and Marie Mansfield, Detroit, Mich.; three nephews: Leo and Donnie Mansfield, Detroit Mich., Russell Mansfield (Nikki) Louisville,; sisters-in-law: Anna Mansfield and Christine Mansfield, Louisville; and a host of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Barlow Cemetery.
