LANSING, Mich. — James P. Arritt, 83, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, in Lansing. He was born and reared in Covington, Va. Following his graduation from Covington High School, he entered the U.S. Navy commissioning program and served in the Pacific as a Navy Ensign during World War II. His education included coursework at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of South Carolina, and graduation from Columbia University in New York City. He married Frances Proctor in 1945 before departing for the Pacific. He served in the Navy until 1946 when he began a career with Ford Motor Company. During the Korean Conflict, he was recalled to active duty and served as a lieutenant aboard the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. Robert F. Keller. Following the Korean Conflict he rejoined Ford, rising to executive level management, retiring after 35 years of employment. In retirement, he remained active in church affairs and volunteer work. His interests included walking and biking. He and Frances enjoyed RV camping, travel with church friends and the company of his family and grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, two daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren: Mark B. and Candace Arritt, Joshua, Alicia, Levi, Drew and Isaac, of Grand Ledge, Mich.; and Brent C. and Sherry Arritt, Brent A. and Amelia of Glasgow. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Frances; his parents, Albert C. and Husie Long Arritt; and an older brother, Arlie Arritt. Services were at First United Methodist Church, Lansing, on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, with burial at Delta Hillside Cemetery, Lansing. Ewell Birge SUMMER SHADE – Ewell Birge, 89, of Summer Shade, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Barren County Health Care Center. Arrangements are incomplete to be announced later by McMurtrey Funeral Home. Herbert Lee Emmitt GLASGOW — Herbert Lee Emmitt, 93, died Tuesday April 8, 2008, at NHC Health Care Facility in Glasgow.
