HOLIDAY SHOPPING: Boys, girls get decked out

GLASGOW — More than 60 members of the Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County were treated to a shopping trip Tuesday at Kmart.

The shopping trip is an annual event the club does for some of its members near Christmas time to help the children pick out such clothing items as shoes, blue jeans, T-shirts, etc.

Boys & Girls Club children are not being served by any other organization for the holidays.

“We are only meeting basic needs,” said Kelly Jenkins, executive director of  the club. “We’re not going on a shopping spree.”

The children are paired with club volunteers, who help them select clothing items their parents have said they need. Once the children have chosen the items they need, then they may select a small toy or game, she said.

“I think what is so neat about this program is [the children] are matched one-on-one [with adults],” Jenkins said, adding that way the children get the individual attention they need.

Bobby Lee Hurt was one of several who volunteered to help out with the shopping event on Tuesday. He has taken part in the program for several years and said he does it because he enjoys it.

“It’s always fun to watch the smile on the kids’ faces, and it gives me a lot of pleasure doing it,” he said. “It’s my favorite part of Christmas. I always enjoy it. I will do it for as long as the program keeps going.”
