Edmonton sewer rates going up

GLASGOW — Residents of the city of Edmonton can expect their sewer rates to increase after the first of the year.

The rate increase is required in order for the city to obtain funding for a sewer rehabilitation project, which city officials say is desperately needed.

“The sewers need to be replaced because they are very, very old,” said Councilwoman Cathy Nunn.

“We haven’t had a sewer rate change for 20-some years.”

Council members approved on second reading Monday night an ordinance setting the new sewer rates, which will increase from $8.75 per 2,000 gallons to $15.35 per 2,000 gallons.

“It needs upgrading,” said Councilman Danny Poynter, adding the sewer rehabilitation project is needed in order for the city to stay compliant with state regulations.

Parts of the sewer system also sustained damage two years ago and need repairs.

“The flood in May of 2010 created quite a bit of problems,” said Mayor Howard Garrett. “We’ve got a couple of manholes in the creek that flooded.”
