Judge-Executive Davie Greer gives 'state of the county' address

GLASGOW — Barren County ranked third in Kentucky for methamphetamine labs in 2012, Judge-Executive Davie Greer said in her “State of the County” speech Wednesday morning at the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce’s first quarterly breakfast of 2013.

She told the estimated 160 people who attended the event at the Glasgow Golf & Country Club, though, that she likes to believe the ranking is that high because our law enforcement community finds and cleans up these labs. The Barren-Edmonson Drug Task Force cleaned up a total of 48 labs last year, confiscating about 3 pounds of crystal meth, she said. They made 93 felony arrests and 61 misdemeanor arrests, she reported.

Greer touched on highlights of other efforts going on around the county as well. For example, a Federal Emergency Management Agency mitigation grant has enabled the county to build 11 tornado safe rooms at volunteer fire departments around the county; all but one are completed.

“I’m proud to report that what comes into the jail pays for what goes out,” Greer said after noting that debt on the new Barren County Detention Center is being fully funded by income to the jail and with no help needed from the general fund.

Moving on from emergency and law enforcement issues, Greer made a pitch to the businesses and others represented at the breakfast for funding assistance for lighting for two new ball fields at Jackie Browning Park.

“If you give us enough, we’ll name a field after you,” she said.
