T.J. Samson Educational Resource Center teaches life-saving techniques

GLASGOW — It takes about two hours to learn how to save a life.

The T.J. Samson Educational Resource Center offers an American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification class every other month. The class teaches adult and infant CPR, the mechanics of child CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator and epinephrine pen and it discusses other lifesaving first response methods.

Susie Bishop, R.N., has been teaching CPR through the resource center for 13 years and will tell anyone that there is no reason not to take the class.

“In an emergency, you may be the only person standing between that person and death,” Bishop said.

Bishop became interested in teaching CPR after working with patients in a coronary care unit for 19 years. Individuals in the community and family members are the first responders in any medical emergency, Bishop said, and they should know what to do if something happens. Learning CPR is easy, she said.

“You think it’s scientific, very complicated, but it’s not,” Bishop said. “If we can get you to the class, we can show you how simple it is and you’ll think, ‘Why did I never do this before?’”

Getting to the class is really the hardest part about learning CPR, Bishop said. Many people think they will never be in an emergency situation, or they think they are too busy to get CPR-certified. However, knowing how to give CPR before emergency medical services can arrive may be crucial in helping a patient survive.

“If they don’t get CPR before EMS gets there, the chances of survival decrease dramatically,” Bishop said.
