Afternoon Update: Barren County burn ban is lifted


The burn ban issued by Barren County Judge/Executive Davie Greer on June 25, 2012, has been lifted as of July 17.


Residents should be advised that the Kentucky Division of Forestry currently has restrictions in place that include the following:

1. Burning within 150 feet of any woodland area is allowed only between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

2. Do not burn within 50 feet of any structure.

3. Do not burn near landfills.

4. Do not burn near streams or sinkholes.

5. Do not burn near utility lines.


Some open burning is legal, with restrictions.  Legal open burning includes plant beds, tobacco curing, animal carcasses (disease control), leaves, natural growth from land clearing, tree limbs felled by storms, weeds, natural land management, warming fires (clean lumber only), camp fires, ceremonial bonfires, cooking, fire training, and household paper products.

However, many materials are illegal to burn at anytime including animal bedding, hay, muck piles (horse manure/hay), asbestos materials, buildings (house, barns, and garages), construction debris, demolition debris, renovation debris, drywall, shingles, household garbage including animal or vegetable, plastic, cans, glass, fence posts, pallets, sawdust, wood chips and shavings, wood mulch, painted, stained, or pressure-treated wood, chemical containers, coated wire, insulated wire, rubber, tires, used oil, motor oil, and industrial, business, school, church, and farm waste. 


The Kentucky Division of Air Quality can impose fines of up to $25,000 per day per violation of the illegal open burning law. For questions about the Kentucky Division of Forestry restrictions, residents are urged to call     1-888-BURN-LAW (1-888-287-6529).
