Infrastructure improvements

GLASGOW — Bryan Crabtree, Glasgow Water Co. maintenance superintendent, operates a hydraulic jackhammer on a skid steer to loosen blacktop on East Washington Street at South Lewis Street on Tuesday. GWC construction crews are replacing an aging 2-inch cast iron water main with the same size polyethylene (a type of plastic) pipe from that intersection along Washington to South Morgan Street, which would take approximately a week. The timeframe for that block, as well as whether or how much additional work will be done in the vicinity, depends on what the crew finds underneath the street, Crabtree said. “We will evaluate the condition of the older water infrastructure as we dig during construction,” said Scott Young, general manager for GWC. “We’re just going to have to get in there and see what we’ve got.” The project is “routine infrastructure improvement” that is part of a long-term goal for updating older parts of the system.  The new line is expected to improve flow and pressure.
