Monroe County schools take 4% increase

Glasgow Daily Times

GLASGOW — The Monroe County Board of Education unanimously decided on the four percent property tax rate for the 2013-2014 school year regular session on Thursday.

The four percent property tax rate will raise the real property tax rate from 45.9 cents to 47.9 cent per $100 of assessed valuation. Lewis Carter, Monroe County Schools superintendent, said unfunded mandates and state and federal grant reductions necessitated the extra tax revenue.

“The state is forcing us to do it,” Carter said. “You need tax revenue to provide quality education. I felt like if we didn’t do this, we’d be moving backwards instead of forward.”
