Glasgow Fire Department has commercial success

GLASGOW — Glasgow Fire Department chief Tony Atwood said he took something off his bucket list.

He, along with about seven or eight other Glasgow firefighters, is in a national commercial for Sonim cellphones.

“This is probably a once in a lifetime experience,” Atwood said. “[The other firefighters] were tickled to death. You just don’t have those opportunities very often. So they were very excited.”

The commercial, which was filmed in Glasgow during the summer, is currently on air, he said.

“I think they filmed three other commercials, but they haven’t aired yet,” Atwood said. “There was one one minute long and two thirty seconds long.

“We’ve only seen the one commercial so far. We’ve had a couple people to call and tell us that they’ve seen it on the air. So that’s pretty crazy just thinking about it. That it’s actually being shown right now. I don’t know the regularity or anything like that but I do know it’s been shown locally right now.”

Atwood said crews traveled from out of state to film.

“A crew flew in from New York and then another part of the crew flew in I believe somewhere in California,” Atwood said. “They came down for two days and done some different shots. The first day we done a lot of stuff. They was shooting the shots of the guys with their gear on. Going to the trucks, stuff like that. The second day, they done some live action shots. For me, it was like being in command and the things I would do. We actually done some scenes where they had some fire in the background.”

Atwood said he found out about the opportunity from a woman he goes to church with. She told him Bluegrass Cellular was looking for people to be in a commercial for Sonim phones.

“She asked if we thought our department would be interested,” Atwood said. “I said, ‘sure.’ I approached the mayor about it and seemed like everybody thought it was a good idea for a little bit of publicity Her husband is actually in it, too.”

Atwood said Sonim phones are used at the firehouse.

According to Sonim’s website, the phones “set the world record for toughest phones. Built based on feedback from millions of workers on some of the most extreme job sites around the globe, we deliver the highest quality rugged phones with best-in-class workforce-critical applications for dozens of industries.”
