Trooper Morris Farris is investigating a collision that occurred today at noon on US 68, three miles east of Lebanon. Joseph L. Osbourn, 18, of Lebanon, was traveling west on US 68, operating a 2010 Pontiac G6 when he crossed the centerline and entered the eastbound traffic lane. Roy M. Burchett, 44, of Gravel Switch, was traveling east on US 68 operating a 2000 Ford Van.
Osbourn attempted to avoid a collision and drove off of the eastbound side of the roadway where the vehicle overturned several times. Osbourn was wearing a seatbelt and refused treatment at the scene. A passenger, 18-year-old Justin Wheatley, of Loretto, was also wearing a seatbelt and refused treatment. Another passenger, 19-year-old Colin D. Whitfill, of Lebanon, was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at Springview Hospital by the Marion County coroner at 1:33 p.m.
Burchett also attempted to avoid the head-on collision and steered his vehicle into the westbound lane. The two vehicles slapped mirrors on the passenger sides and Burchett was able to keep control of his vehicle. He and a passenger, 34-year-old Elizabeth Burchett, of Gravel Switch, were not injured.
Trooper Farris was assisted at the scene by the Marion County Sheriffs Department and Marion County EMS.
