By this time of year, the average American has earned enough income to equal his or her food costs for the entire year, according to Kentucky Farm Bureau. The bureau uses the week of Feb. 17-23 to celebrate Food Check-Out Week, a week dedicated to educating the public about food costs.
Americans have some of the cheapest and still highest quality food in the world, according to Glenda Cox, co-chair of the Barren County Farm Bureau women’s committee and organizer of local Food Check-Out Week recognitions.
“Food Check-Out Week is an opportunity to inform the community about our affordable food that we have access to,” Cox said.
Food Check-Out Week is especially important to showcase the good work of community farmers, Cox said. Modern farmers are using less land, water and energy than previous generations to produce more food, according to farm bureau statistics.
Almost 90 percent of U.S. farms are run by a family or individual, and the average farmer grows enough food to feed 154 people.
“We want to show the real value of the American farmer and especially our local farmer,” Cox said.
