BCMS student wins bee

GLASGOW — Hours of preparation, pouring over a list of vocabulary words, mounted to one day: the Barren County Regional Spelling Bee Competition on Friday at the Barren County Cooperative Extension.

The spelling bee, sponsored by the Kentucky Derby Festival, featured fourth- through eighth-grade students from Glasgow, Barren County and Caverna school districts.

The 13 students competed against students within their school to earn their seat at the regional competition. Adding to the excitement of the event, South Green Elementary fourth-grader Samantha Stone returned to defend her title.  Last year, Samantha won the competition but found out later she was technically too young to compete as a third grader and didn’t qualify to go to the state competition.

The spelling bee kicked off with the word spherical, completed by contestant one, Madison High of Hiseville Elementary.

The school-based competition contained words from the hundreds featured in a booklet of sample words ranging from commonly misspelled words to old English words, but for the regional competition any word from the 4th edition of the  “American Heritage Dictionary” was fair game.

The competition quickly became more difficult with the uncommonly used word betrothal in round one that knocked out Nathan Hood from North Jackson Elementary.

Contestant three Aimee Scott of Park City Elementary made it through the second round and was eliminated only because she misunderstood the word announcer Henry Royse read aloud. She mistook him for saying residence and spelled the word correctly, but Royse actually said resonance, causing the student to be eliminated.
