Diane Dorman, a 17-year-old single mom, holds her two-month-old son Zander in her arms in the crowded Barren County High School gymnasium. He’s wearing a tiny red T-shirt that says, “My mommy is graduating today.”
Despite all the difficulties, Dorman was one of 308 Barren County High School graduates on Friday night. She had done more than just graduate, Dorman paved a future for herself with a nearly full-ride scholarship to Lindsey Wilson College. She hopes to study human services and to work for a non-profit organization to help international students and teenager mothers. Dorman’s mother Adriane Thiery has been a driving force for the teen, often taking care of her son while she completed homework. For many of the students, like Dorman, Friday was a day to celebrate all the support they received from family, friends and faculty.
