Matthews: Repairs should cost just under $1 million

GLASGOW — Bo Matthews, Barren County Schools superintendent cited several costly needed renovations, mainly to the Barren County High School gymnasium roof and the central office roof, during Thursday night’s board meeting.

Other possible renovations Matthews cited were to Barren County High School, built in 1974. It was said to need plumbing, electrical work and other maintenance. The board took action to approve a BG-1 which is the first step to initiating the construction projects on Thursday.

The central office, built in 1917, was the site of the first free standing post office in Glasgow. The roof is aged and desperately needs to be addressed, according to Matthews and several other who work in the central office. School board member Shelly Groce said she’s seen employees in the central office often use trash cans to collect water droplets from the leaky roof.

Though Matthews said there are currently around $3.9 million is the school district’s capital fund to utilize, he expects the necessary renovations to be under $1 million. The monies in this fund are specific building designations of “mortar and brick,” Matthews said, which cannot be utilized for anything else.
