11:57 AFTERNOON UPDATE: Mammoth Cave begins shutdown

Mammoth Cave National Park — A sign taped to the gate at the entrance of the road that passes through the picnic area at Mammoth Cave National Park informed visitors Tuesday that the national park is closed due to the government shutdown. The ferry at the national park will cease operation due to the shutdown at 2 p.m. The visitor center will close at noon. The national park will remain closed until notice is given by federal government officials to reopen. This is the first time since 1995 that the national park closed due to a federal government shutdown. Gina Kinslow / Glasgow Daily Times
