GLASGOW — The Barren County Board of Education will have three new members out of a total of five when the next year begins.

In a surprising turn, two incumbents on the board have been defeated by their challengers and a third board member who chose not to run again left a her seat open for a third newcomer.

Kerry Dilley, Shelly Key Groce and Randy Simmons will join Robbie Toms and Charlotte Beals on the board when they are sworn in before the January meeting.

Dilley defeated Kenneth Edwards by a narrow margin in District 2. Edwards had served as a member of the school board since 1994. Dilley beat him by 44 votes – 670 to 626.

Dilley said he was a little surprised by his victory over Edwards, who was vice chairman of the board, but that he is ready to get to work in his new role.

“That was an overwhelming feeling. I didn't have the expectation of winning, but I'm glad I won the race,” he said. “I'm looking forward to embracing the opportunity. There are many things to be tended to, but right now, I'm just savoring the moment.”
