Fire Chief Atwood asks for 3rd fire station, new truck

GLASGOW —

If Glasgow Fire Department Chief Tony Atwood were to get everything the two most expensive items on his budget wish list for the 2013-14 budget year, the city would be looking at creating an additional fire station and purchasing a new truck for use at the Glasgow Municipal Airport.

Atwood and Department of Public Works Superintendent Kurt Frey got to be the first two to discuss their departments’ needs and wants with the Glasgow City Council’s Finance Committee at its regular meeting Tuesday in City Hall.

The fire chief didn’t start with the top-dollar items, though.

Atwood began his presentation: “One of my top priorities is replacing the turnout gear.”

Some of the gear is pretty worn; three sets are not usable at all, he said, the three new firefighters still in training are wearing backup gear or gear left behind by someone who retired. Atwood proposed purchasing 18 sets in FY 2014 and another 18 sets the following year, following a pattern of how it was done four and five years ago. The total for 18 sets of pants, jackets and gloves would be between $35,000 and $40,000, Atwood estimated.

“It’s expensive, but it’s life safety for my guys,” he said.

Atwood said that the city’s development pattern and annexations have resulted in some areas having response times that are not satisfactory.

“I think we need to look at a new station on the north side of town,” he said.

He suggested a very preliminary ballpark estimate of $750,000, but he emphasized he really doesn’t know what the cost would be at this point. After the meeting, he said the desired footprint would be about 6,000 square feet.

Eventually, the city would also need to consider moving the existing fire substation farther south to cover that end of town.

A new truck for use for aircraft accidents would cost about $225,000, Atwood estimated.
