The Barren County Board of Education met in a brief special-called session Friday afternoon to approve a declaration of surplus property in time to sell some items at the Kiwanis farm machinery auction on Saturday.
A pentle hitch trailer, batwing mower and a water reel will be put up for auction Saturday in an effort to make some extra money for the school district in a time where budgets are tight. Barren County has been looking at every form of revenue available to them, superintendent Bo Matthews said, and the Kiwanis auction was an opportunity they did not want to pass up.
“We’re continuing to be responsive to the financial forecast we’re looking at and this is just another way we can make dollars available,” Matthews said.
Each of the pieces of equipment the school district is getting rid of has either lost its usefulness or there are other options that would be more beneficial, said Steve Russell, director of facilities and maintenance. Using the trailer to haul mowing equipment around the district takes a lot of time, Russell said, and the dump truck the district has to use to tow the trailer is about 35 years old.
“It’s become a very weak item and almost dangerous to pull that trailer with the dump truck,” Russell said.
The batwing mower has become unnecessary because so many new buildings on the school properties have diminished land to be mowed, Russell said, and the water reel was used before underground irrigation was installed in the school playing fields.
Along with the items to be sold at the Kiwanis auction, the board also approved a dump truck and four buses for surplus sale, and five buses for disposal.
“This represents dollars that we can do something else with,” Matthews said.
