Susan Chambers was first approached by her youngest daughter, Cayce Cole, about writing a children's book about Greek mythology six years ago.
Cole, who lives in California, had shared with her mother, who lives in Edmonton, that she had been looking for book about Greek mythology for her 3-year-old son, Cortez.
“She went out looking for a book and there was not one to be had for children,” said Chambers, an English instructor at Western Kentucky University’s Glasgow Campus. “I taught mythology for eons and she just loved it. So, she said, ‘Mom, if you write the [poems], I’ll do the illustrations. We will make us a book.’”
The result was “The Olympians,” the story of the Greek gods.
The mother-daughter duo collaborated long distance when working on the book.
“I would write it and call her and say, ‘Hey, how does this sound?’” Chambers said.
Cole, an artist, created the illustrations with paper cutouts. Each feature of every illustration is a separate cutout, Chambers said.
