The Metcalfe County Board of Education approved a motion to allow all elementary schools to provide a Saturday school, if they felt there was a need, at the Metcalfe County Schools regular session Tuesday.
School insurance and transportation were also topics of discussion.
Edmonton Elementary Principal Karen Nunn said there was a need for Saturday school as a student behavior deterrent. She said she’s seen a handful of students who continually receive school suspensions with little effect to prevent future student misbehaviors, and she’s left wondering what could be the next possible step.
“Saturday school will be for the worst case scenario and the last thing we’ll try before the next step of suspension,” Nunn said. “We want to use it as a deterrent.”
She said she planned to offer Saturday school once every three weeks for four hours with a certified teacher to ensure the students are working on homework. Nunn said she plans on using $100 of site based funds to make Saturday school possible.
