Making fighting fires safer

GLASGOW — When firefighters respond to a scene, they naturally don’t want to go into the situation blind; the smoke is enough of an issue in that regard.

Any information they can use to let them know what to expect is helpful, but only if it’s quickly accessible. The Glasgow Fire Department is working on making that happen; it won’t be overnight.

In the past few months, Chief Tony Atwood learned of the availability of a database program associated with another software program the department already had, and as time allows, a information sheet will be completed on each nonresidential location that eventually will be something firefighters can pull up on mobile data terminals in their trucks.

The department has been doing a version of this preplanning since at least the mid-1990s, but that information was much more limited than what will be in the database, the chief said.

Before, the information might consist of contact information and possibly a floor plan, typically only for larger commercial, industrial or health care facilities. In some cases, information on utility shut-off points would be included in the physical folder inside a fire truck, Atwood said.
