Learn to eat cheaply weekly

GLASGOW — A small but talkative group of community members gathered at the Barren County Extension Office Friday morning to learn how to eat and grocery shop on a budget.

“Eat Cheap for a Week” was taught by Vicki Britt, a new paraprofessional program assistant working at the extension office, and the free class discussed all aspects of cheap, healthy eating, from making a budget and where to find coupons to checking labels for nutritional information. Local Glasgow and Barren County family resource coordinators helped sponsor the event.

To cope in a struggling economy with rising food prices, Britt said it is important to carefully examine how you are spending your food money and how to make those food dollars go the farthest.

“There’s ways that we can get more out of what we’ve got,” Britt said.

Looking for coupons and sales is an easy way to keep costs down, Britt said. Check the local newspaper and websites for coupons, and enroll in loyalty programs if they are beneficial. Buy produce seasonally, only buy meat on sale, don’t be afraid of generic store brands and also look at buying bigger amounts.

“Buy in bulk,” Britt said. “It’s almost always cheaper to buy in bulk.”

Class members shared their own experiences with saving money while grocery shopping. Several of those who attended Friday’s class shop at food salvage stores around Barren County and Horse Cave, and some use manufacturer’s websites to find additional coupons. One woman said she talks to the person in the meat department and is able to snag a discount if she buys her meat in significant bulk. Another attendee said she always calls Walgreens to get the day’s milk price, and then requests that price from Walmart. Each person had their own story for how they have saved money over the years.

Fear of leftovers has no place in eating on a budget, according to Britt’s advice. Food should never go wasted, and cooking once for several meals saves time.
