Issues arise with police chief’s resume

GLASGOW — A review of the resume of the man chosen to be Glasgow’s new police chief has uncovered several discrepancies in the information he provided to city officials.

Glasgow Mayor Rhonda Trautman announced Friday afternoon that Guy J. Turcotte had been chosen as the city’s new chief of the police department. A partial copy of Turcotte’s resume was provided to members of the media during the press conference at city hall.

A check of online news articles and other information about Turcotte began to reveal differences in what he had written about his work history and what other sources were stating.

The main points of difference involve the actual dates of employment and lengths of service at two of the previous departments for which Turcotte worked.

The resume stated that Turcotte was chief of police at the Baldwin Police Department in Baldwin, Fla., from January 2002 to April 2006, or a period of four years and three months.

Several news articles from the “Florida Times-Union” of Jacksonville, Fla., were written during January and February of 2004 in regards to an election that was conducted on Jan. 13, 2004, in which Turcotte defeated then police chief Harvey Branch by a margin of seven votes. Turcotte was sworn into office on Feb. 3, 2004, according to one Times-Union article.

Another article from the same newspaper stated he resigned as a police officer from the Baldwin police department in July of 2003.

“Turcotte said he resigned from the force after about 16 months because he was unhappy with how the department was being managed,” the Feb. 7, 2004, Times-Union article stated.

Turcotte only served two years and two months in the post as chief at Baldwin, according to information from the Times-Union. His resume included the time he served as a police officer from January 2002 to July 2003 and the period of time after he resigned before being elected in his total time as chief.

Turcotte’s resume also stated he was employed as interim police chief of Crawford, Neb., for a period of eight months from May 2009 to January 2010. Information found online along with an application Turcotte filled out for the city of Mandeville, La. on Dec. 1, 2009, show he was only employed in Nebraska for three months from mid-June of 2009 to mid-September of 2009.

Turcotte listed an independent consultant position with Turcotte Enterprise’s Police & Security in Parker, Fla., from September 2009 to present also during the same time period the resume stated he was still working in Crawford, Neb.

Turcotte stated he has been a chief of police for six years in the first sentence of his resume, but the combined time spent at Baldwin and Crawford, along with two and a half years as chief at the Cedar Grove, Fla., police department from April 2006 to October 2008, is less than five years.

Attempts to reach Turcotte where he is staying locally were unsuccessful by press time. An alternate phone number was also not available.

Trautman stated at Friday’s announcement that the city had received 29 applications for the job of police chief and the committee that included herself, councilman Freddie Norris, city attorney Ben Rogers and retired KSP Trooper Tommy Pendleton interviewed eight finalists.
