Kathy Bottorff never expected to be a hog farmer. A former insurance underwriter, she moved away from her hometown of Cave City at a young age and sought the big city life in Louisville. Decades later, she has returned to the area to farm full-time with her husband, Bill.
“If you had told me, ‘you’re going to be a pig farmer,’ I would have said no, uh-uh, and I would have done everything to keep that from happening,” Kathy said. “At the same time, I’ve never been happier.”
Kathy and Bill Bottorff bought a farm in northwest Metcalfe County, near the Barren and Hart county lines, about three years ago. Bill had been raising angus beef cattle for years, and Kathy left her career to pursue farming full-time with her husband. When Bill told Kathy he wanted to start raising pigs, Kathy balked at first. The pigs she grew up around were mean, she said.
