Author books on Boone’s poetry

Murrey writes story of Ky. poet laureate

GLASGOW — A mimeographed piece of paper in her mailbox in the 1980s at Western Kentucky University spurred Loretta Murrey to invite poet Joy Bale Boone to speak to her Introductory to English Literature classes at the university’s Glasgow campus.

Murrey called the number listed on the mimeograph and Boone accepted. That was the beginning of a long-term relationship between the two.

“I just thought it would be fun to have someone to come and talk about poetry. I called her. She lived in Elkton at that time. Sure enough she was willing to come to Glasgow to discuss her poetry with my two or three Intro to Lit classes,” Murrey said. “We just never stopped. She came every semester. She read her poetry.”
