Darrell Pickett has been named chairman of the Barren County Veterans Association executive committee.
Pickett was chosen Thursday by the executive committee to take the position previously filled by the late Bobby Travis.
“Mostly, I want to let people know who to contact when it comes to things related to the veterans association,” Pickett said Friday morning. “We handle things like the annual Veterans Day parade, the Veterans Day dinner, the Veterans Wall (of Honor) and things like that.”
Pickett said his first order of business is to raise money for those events.
“We are asking for sponsors in order for us to have the parade and dinner. We are in dire need of donations,” he said. “All of that can be directed toward me, too.”
The former Glasgow mayor and Glasgow police chief said he is a member of the American Legion, but had not served on the executive committee.
“Anything that deals with (veterans association), I will be the contact for it,” Pickett said.
He said the membership voted Thursday to adjust the day on which the annual community Veterans Day parade will be.
“It will be on the Saturday before Nov. 11. Hopefully we can educate people about Veterans Day,” Pickett said, and allow more people to attend the parade.
“The dinner is still the same. It is on the day before Veterans Day, which is Nov. 10,” he said.
The executive committee of the Barren County Veterans Association consists of local representatives of the Marine Corps League, the Disabled American Veterans Association, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Associate members are from Rolling Thunder and Freedom Warriors.
