Man killed in crash

GLASGOW — A three-vehicle collision shortly before 1 p.m. Monday killed one and injured five on Burkesville Road near the intersection with Old Sherfey Road.

The wreck occurred when Jeffrey T. Ashley, 43, of Marrowbone, was westbound in a 2001 Chevy Cavalier when it crossed the center line, striking a 1999 Freightliner with an attached trailer hauling logs. The tractor-trailer was driven by Clinton E. Birdwell, 33 of Red Boiling Springs, Tenn. Ashley’s vehicle spun out of control and struck an eastbound 2004 Dodge Durango driven by Randall A. Honeycutt, 35, of Albany, which was following the tractor-trailer, according to a preliminary investigation by the Barren County Sheriff’s Office.

Ashley was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Tim Gibson. Honeycutt and four of his passengers — Shana L. Honeycutt, 33, Mattie L. Honeycutt, 8, and two-week-old twins — were all transported by Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Services to T.J. Samson Community Hospital for treatment of injuries, where they were later released. Birdwell refused medical transport.

Ashley was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but the others involved were belted.

Mark Hurt was driving behind the vehicles at the time of the crash, and stayed at the scene to direct traffic while the accident was investigated.

“You couldn’t even tell what kind of car [Ashley’s] was, the whole front end was crushed,” Hurt said.

Hurt said he saw Mattie Honeycutt get out of the car and sit in a field while they waited for ambulances to arrive.

“She was just sitting there and then they all walked to the ambulance,” he said.

Deputy Kevin Wilson is leading the investigation with the assistance of Detective Rusty Anderson and Deputy Rodney Sponhouse.

The Summer Shade Volunteer Fire Department, Deputy Coroner J.D. Walden and Barren-Metcalfe EMS also responded.

According to BCSO Public Relations Director Trevor Phillips, this is the first fatal accident the BCSO has investigated in 2011. The department worked two fatal wrecks during this same time period in 2010.
