Proposed road plan has perks

GLASGOW — A proposed state road plan will bring nearly $30 million in funding to Barren County.

The state  House of Representatives is expected to consider adoption of the state road plan today.

Included in the plan for improvements are Ky. 90, Ky. 70, Veterans Outer Loop, U.S. 68/Ky. 80 and the construction of a new bridge over Lick Fork Creek on Lick Branch Road.

“We came out awfully well in Barren County,” said Rep. Johnny Bell, D-Glasgow.

The plan includes state monies to fund utility construction and the purchase of rights-of-way along two sections of Ky. 90 east of Glasgow.

Ky. 90 has been a safety concern for local and state officials for several years.

“By January of next year, Kentucky 90 east will be shovel-ready,” Bell said.

The plan also includes federal stimulus money for Veterans Outer Loop in Glasgow from U.S. 68/Ky. 80 to the Louie B. Nunn Parkway, and $1.5 million for construction of utilities from U.S. 31E to U.S. 68/Ky. 80.

Bell pointed out that Ky. 90 did not qualify for federal stimulus money because it was not “shovel-ready.”

“I’m very pleased with what we were able to do as far as the stimulus money to complete these projects,” Bell said, adding he thinks completion of those sections of the road will help Glasgow fair better economically.

Another project that has been in the works for many years and is included in the plan is Ky. 70. The plan calls for improvements from Interstate 65 in Cave City to the entrance of Mammoth Cave National Park.

The plan also calls for transforming U.S. 68/Ky. 80 from a two-lane road to a three-lane road from Veterans’ Outer Loop to Farmers Livestock Market, as well as the construction of the bridge over Lick Fork Creek on Lick Branch Road.

Local officials were happy to learn the projects are included in the proposed road plan.
