Living with the aftermath of breast cancer treatment

GLASGOW —

Mammograms were not new to her, and the one she had in December 2000 was just routine – until something was spotted on an image of her right breast.

“We did a needle biopsy within days,” Betty Allway said.

“When they find a lump in your breast, everything has to be done quickly,” she said. “Then I went to Vanderbilt [University Medical Center] for a second opinion because my children insisted that I do that. … I had surgery in February. And you know, I never thought I’d forget the date, but I have.”

She knew the lumpectomy occurred after her 35th wedding anniversary on the 19th, though.
