A Smiths Grove man's condition had stabilized Wednesday at University of Louisville Hospital, his sister said, after he was injured in a collision on Dripping Springs Road at Stovall Road (Ky. 685) at 7:21 a.m. Tuesday.
Darrell G. Perkins, 54, of Smiths Grove was driving a 1995 Mercury Villager south on Stovall Road when a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier heading west – driven by Justin L. Osborn, 28, of Park City – pulled into the intersection at Dripping Springs Road, according to a Barren County Sheriff's Office report.
The Cavalier struck a tree before coming to rest and the Villager overturned, landing on the driver's side, and Perkins had to be extracted by mechanical means, according to the report.
The Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Service, deputies with the Barren County Sheriff's Office and Cave City volunteer firefighters responded to the scene.
Both drivers were transported to T.J. Samson Community Hospital, where Osborn was treated and then released. Perkins was later transferred to the U of L Hospital for a head injury, according to the report.
Perkins and another witness told the BCSO they did not see the Cavalier stop at the stop sign on Dripping Springs Road, according to the report.
Perkins' sister, Rita Felkins, said he had had some bleeding in his brain which seemed to be under control. Surgery was performed Wednesday on his left thumb, because the part from approximately the bottom of the cuticle to the tip of the digit is gone, Felkins said.
“He's in stable condition,” she said. “He's been through a lot.”
