Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County stands on its own

GLASGOW — The Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County is now an independent charter club of Boys and Girls Club of America, which is what local club officials have always wanted.

“That was a dream of Ruell Houchens, who actually started this club,” said Patrick Gaunce, a member of the board of directors.

Houchens, who died in September 2010, was an early supporter of the club.

Becoming an independent chartered club means the local club is now accountable for itself and the 130 to 150 children it serves on a daily basis, Gaunce said.

“It’s probably a point of validation for all the hard work that has gone into building the club and doing what the national organization wants the club to do,” he said.

The Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County has operated under the same charter as the Boys and Girls Club of Bowling Green since its inception about six years ago.

By becoming an independent charter, the Glasgow-Barren County club now has access to a wealth of resources ranging from new program materials to new grant options.

“It opens up a multitude of opportunities,” said Kelly Lile-Jenkins, club director.

In the past, the Glasgow-Barren club often shared grant funding opportunities with the Bowling Green club. By being an independent club, the Glasgow-Barren County club won’t have to share grant funds with another club, she said.

In addition, the Glasgow-Barren County club’s board of directors can now focus on its own club. When the local club operated as a unit of the Bowling Green club, its board of directors served in an advisory capacity.

“It allows us to concentrate our efforts on serving our individual members,” said Sam Dickinson, board member.
