Group challenges hospital board

GLASGOW — In the first months after what became T.J. Samson Community Hospital was incorporated in 1926, the people behind the project spelled out the steps through which the facility’s board of trustees was to be elected. That process was eliminated 45 years ago.

Now, a group of Barren County-area residents is willing to take the question of how that board is created to court, if necessary, in an effort to give the community more of a role in the decision.

According to articles of incorporation amended in early 1927, anyone who contributed more than $25 toward the public contribution of $65,000 that was combined with other funding to get the facility started was considered a subscriber to the stock; that stock had no monetary value, but it gave the stockholders the right to vote at an annual meeting on the last Saturday in May to elect the board of trustees. Approximately 450 are listed as having contributed, with the smallest amount being $5 and the largest being $25,000 from the eponymous T.J. Samson. Of those contributing, more than 150 entities are listed as having contributed more than $25, but a few of those were businesses and organizations.
