Glasgow city officials are leaning toward creating a city engineer position and a safety director position, with the existence of each one expected to save the city money in the long run – possibly sooner.
At the Glasgow City Council’s Personnel Policy Committee regular meeting Monday in City Hall, council and committee members Wendell Honeycutt, Freddie Norris and Karalee Oldencamp, as well as nonvoting members Mayor Rhonda Riherd Trautman and Barbara England, who manages human resources for the city, tweaked the tentative position description for city engineer. It still would have to be presented to the full council for approval of an ordinance – which requires two readings at separate meetings – adding the position.
The city engineer would primarily split time between duties involving the Glasgow Regional Landfill and Stormwater Division, but would also contribute expertise in a variety of other ways and work on projects with other departments, divisions or entities such as the Street Division, the Joint City-County Planning Commission and Parks Department.
“This position will provide some in-house services that we currently have to contract out. We expect it to be a savings to the city,” Trautman said after that meeting.
