Firearms allowed openly on government property

GLASGOW — Local government offices and departments are making some adjustments in order to ensure they are in compliance with a piece of legislation passed last April and put into effect in January.

Kentucky’s 2012 House Bill 500 amended a previous Kentucky Revised Statute to prevent local government entities from passing any ordinances, executive orders, policies or any other rule to limit firearms and ammunition, even on government property. Under the bill, local governments cannot prohibit any person from openly carrying firearms onto government property, such as into the county government building or city hall, fire and police departments and other facilities owned by local government. Courthouses and public schools are exceptions.
