GLASGOW —

No matter what the spelling, Eastern Elementary School officials will be cautious of any message deemed a potential threat, as shown Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 2:05 p.m., 15 minutes before school was set to dismiss, an Eastern Elementary student reported a threat to the principal, Will Compton, according to a Barren County school district press release sent out shortly after 4:30 p.m. The message, “balm,” with the first name of a student, was written on a trash receptacle and a toilet paper dispenser in a restroom.

Schools must investigate every potential threat, Superintendent Bo Matthews said, so local law enforcement and the district’s central office were called. With no date or time on the message and since the school day was nearly over, the principal decided to proceed with putting students on the buses for dismissal.
