Monroe County school district closed for rest of week

GLASGOW — One southcentral Kentucky school district has cancelled classes for the remainder of the week due to illness.

Officials with the Monroe County School System decided to close schools on Monday after attendance dropped to 81 percent.

“We started out last week right at 96 percent and by Friday we had dropped down to 91 percent,” said Lewis Carter, superintendent. “On Monday morning, it was like 84 percent and by lunch it was 81 percent, so we felt if we kept having school we would be exposing students to illness. For the protection of the students, we decided to take a break and let everyone get well.”

Attendance in one kindergarten class, which typically has 22 students, dropped to seven students, he said.

The types of illness that are affecting Monroe County students include strep throat, a stomach virus and flu.

School district officials checked with local health officials regarding the flu to see how many confirmed cases of influenza there actually were.

“One day there were 15 positive cases for flu and the next day there were eight to 10 positive cases for flu,” Carter said.
