12:23 AFTERNOON UPDATE: Eaton receives 18 month prison sentence

BOWLING GREEN — Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton received an 18-month prison sentence, plus two years of supervised release, on Thursday in federal court.  Eaton was not taken into custody immediately after being sentenced. He will have roughly 45 days before he has to report for custody. He may be released from prison before serving the full 18 months if he exhibits good behavior.

Judge Joseph McKinley said it wasn't just to punish/deter him, but to send a message to other law enforcement that they can't get away with things just because they are in law enforcement.

Barren County Judge-Executive Davie Greer issued a press release on Thursday stating that Eaton had resigned as sheriff. Greer stated in the release that Eaton's resignation, which became effective at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, was delivered both in person and by facsimile to her office at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to state law, Greer has the authority to appoint someone to serve the remaining time left in Eaton's term as sheriff. This person will continue to serve as sheriff until a successor is elected, Greer stated in the press release.

"As Barren County judge-executive, I am conscientiously and diligently considering the person to fill this position," she stated in the press release. "As soon as a decision has been made as to the appointment, a press conference will be scheduled and publicly announced."
