Local student accepted to Gatton Academy

GLASGOW — David and Starla Buckley have always known there was something different about their daughter, Tori, and the Barren County parents now know what separates their child from others — drive and gritty determination.

Last month, Buckley, the former student and tennis and soccer standout at Barren County High School, was  officially accepted to the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, which is located on the Western Kentucky University (WKU) campus.

On May 28, 2012, Newsweek ranked Gatton as the No. 1 high school in America, and the school ranked fifth on the list in 2011.

The 15-year-old Buckley said she began researching possible opportunities at Gatton and that one thing simply led to another.

“I started researching the school and I knew I wanted to go there,” Buckley said. “I just learned what they were about … I then began the application process.”

Buckley said it was during her tour of the school when she knew Gatton was the right fit.

“I went for a preview day … I was able to take a tour of the building and learned all about the opportunities,” Buckley said. “That’s when I was sure that I wanted to go to Gatton.”

Buckley said she had to submit four essays as well as community and teacher recommendations.
