Metcalfe County schools closed due to bomb threat

GLASGOW — Metcalfe County Schools closed at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning due to a bomb threat.

Justin Hubbard, MCS public relations, said a hand-written note was found around 7 a.m. at the high school, threatening to endanger students at three of Metcalfe County schools.

As a precautionary measure, Hubbard said the district closed all the schools and sent the students back home on the buses.

Hubbard said anytime there is a threat to students’ safety, they take it very seriously.

“Anytime we have a threat, we work with the police to sweep the school and make sure it’s safe for the students to return,” he said.

Chris Huffman, MCS director of student safety said though they have evacuation drills, it was difficult to be prepare for the mass evacuation of more than 1,500 students.

“It was a challenge,” Huffman said.

He said the students that are transported by bus were bused home within about an hour of the incident, but the difficulty was finding a safe place for students whose parents pick them up after school. Elementary students were bused to a local church, and high school and middle school students were kept in the back parking lot of the school away from the building.
