‘I’m going to do that one day’

GLASGOW — When Margie Bartley was raising her three children, and she found enough time to sit down and watch an artist painting on TV, she would say to herself, “I'm going to do that one day.”

Fast forward to present day and Bartley, now 71, not only has her own studio, she also teaches acrylic painting classes through the Monroe County Community Education Program. She has just started her seventh year as an acrylic painting instructor.

“Miss Margie is super. She's phenomenal to work with,” said Kathy Grace, community education director.

When Grace had a request for someone to teach acrylic painting, Grace thought of Bartley and gave her a call to  see if she would be interested in teaching a class or two.

Bartley declined at first, but she eventually accepted Grace's offer. She now teaches two acrylic painting classes — one during the day on Tuesdays and another at night on Thursdays, both of which run for a period of six weeks.

On Tuesday morning, Bartley looked over the shoulder of each student, offering assistance when they needed it.

Her students are quite fond of her and said she is a wonderful instructor.

“She's very patient,” said Merlean Holland. “We can't make a mistake she can't fix.”

Holland and Bartley go way back. They worked together at the National Store in downtown Tompkinsville several years ago. Linda Spear, another  of Bartley's students, also worked with Holland and Bartley at the National Store, and asked Bartley to teach her how to paint people. Spear wants to do a portrait of Elvis.

Bartley admitted portraits are not her strength. She did a self-portrait once.

“It didn't turn out too good,” she said.
